John Scott Information
JOHN SCOTT
British, 1802-1885
The ship Richard Rylands in Table Bay, Cape Town. Signed and dated lower right "J. Scott 1870".
Note: The Richard Rylands was built in New Brunswick, Canada in 1863. She was registered at 1,390 tons and measured 203 feet in length. She spent most of her years as a merchant vessel in the British-Indian trade, but she disappears from records in 1877 after being sold to German owners.
Oil on canvas, 28" x 42 1/4". Framed.
In his book on “Ship Portrait Painters”, 1978, C. H. Ward-Jackson notes that John Scott was “an excellent and productive specialist in portraits of merchantmen off points of land as far apart as Dover and Cape Town”. This indeed is a fair assessment of Scott, who during a remarkable artistic career executed a substantial number of high quality ship portraits, of which the present oil is exemplary. Scott was born at Morpeth set amongst the beautiful Northumbrian countryside about sixteen miles north of Newcastle on 6th May 1802; just over a month later he was taken to the local village church for his christening by his parents Luke and Anne née Grant. Though he was to excel as a painter and draughtsman his career began in a very different direction since at the time of the 1841 census, when he and his wife Eleanor and their nine children were living at Westoe, South Shields, he described his main job as that of a baker. Ten years later he and some of his family were still living at South Shields at which stage Scott described himself as a grocer and mariner though he was already painting with relish and selling his art. His years as a mariner were however an invaluable preparation for him to become a successful marine artist and it was precisely because of his formative years at sea that he learnt so much about shipping, the sea and the coastal outlines. This enabled him to become perfectly adept in describing the various workings of a ship, from its rigging to how the wind caught the sails or the way in which a vessel moved through the water.
Christopher Wood’s “Dictionary of Victorian Artists” notes that John Scott trained under the marine artist John Wilson Carmichael (1800-68), which would almost certainly have been sometime before Carmichael moved from Newcastle to London during the late 1840s. It was not long after his training from Carmichael that Scott launched his own artistic career since there are many extremely competent ship portraits by him dating from the mid 1840s.
Such was the quality of Scott’s work that many of his works have been acquired by a number of important public collections. They can now be admired at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich as well as Tyne & Wear Museums Maritime and Industrial Collection, Shipley Art Gallery Gateshead, Hull Maritime Museum, the Laing Art Gallery Newcastle, South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, Hartlepool Museum, Newcastle University, Merseyside Maritime Museum at Liverpool, Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museum of Wales, the Peabody Museum, Salem, Mass and the Mariners’ Museum, Newport News Virginia.

LIFE AND CAREER

William Joseph Shayer, senior was a self-taught artist, who began by painting decorations on rush-bottom chairs. He moved on to painting carriages in the town of Guildford, after which he started doing heraldic painting. Ultimately, he began painting oil on canvas and became skilled at portraying woodland scenes with gypsies, people and animals in front of country inns and farm houses, and beach scenes crowded with boats and fishermen.[1]
He lived mainly in the south of England, in Shirley, Southampton, but painted throughout Hampshire and in a wooded district in the southwest part of Hampshire called the New Forest. Michael Hoy, a wealthy Southampton merchant, was one of his most enthusiastic patrons and bought many of Shayer's paintings of the area.[2]
He sometimes collaborated with other artists. Particularly successful were his collaborations with Edward Charles Williams, where Williams would paint the landscape and Shayer would add in people and animals. He also collaborated with other members of Williams' family, Shayer's second wife Elizabeth Waller said to somehow be related to Williams.[3] The Old Roadside Inn that is shown here is one example of a collaboration between Shayer and Williams, and Near Wantage, Berkshire is another.[4]
Shayer was a competent landscape artist, but he is best known as a figure painter. His work is reminiscent in some respects to the paintings of George Morland, another very popular figure painter. Shayer's work though has a depth and brightness to it missing from the paintings of many of his contemporaries, due to his skillful application of glaze (i.e., spreading a thin, oily, transparent layer of paint over a dry opaque paint).[5] He exhibited at the Royal Academy (6 works), the British Institution (82 works), and at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists (338 works). He also exhibited in many of the lesser-known Victorian art venues as well.[6] His works are on display at many museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery, and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.[7]
Shayer lived a long life, during which he had two wives and ten children. His eldest son, William Joseph Shayer, junior (1811-1892), was also a painter, and painted in a style very similar to his father. Their paintings are easily confused, which is made all the more difficult by the fact that they probably collaborated on several paintings in the elder Shayer's later years.[8] Three of Shayer senior's younger sons – Edward Dasherwood Shayer (1821-1864), Henry Thring Shayer (1825-1894) and Charles Walker Shayer (1826-1914) – became painters at well, and all assisted him at times in his studio.[9] William Shayer, senior died at the age of 92 on 21 December 1879 at his home at Bladon Lodge near Southampton.[10]

EDOUARD ROSSET-GRANGER (1853-1934)

Was a French genre and portrait painter who adopted the academic style. Studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel, Édouard Louis Dubufe and AlexisJoseph Mazerolle. He painted portraits, landscapes and genre works, and also made illustrations for various newspapers and publishing houses.
From 1878, he began to exhibit mythological and genre works at the Paris Salons and at the Sociéte nationale des beauxarts, receiving medals in 1889 and 1890. From year 1906 to 1909, he worked with Guillaume Dubufe on decorating the town hall in Saint-Mandé. In 1900, he was invited to paint Le Train blue on a decorative panel for the Gare de Lyon restaurant in Paris.

In their style, colour, composition and choice of subjects, Rosset-Granger's works benefited from his familiarity with Bouguereau, Boulanger and Lefebvre. From 1906, his studio was located at 45 ave de Villiers in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
He died in 1934 in Paris
